Political Correctness
I am starting to have trouble with all the rise in sensitivity awareness in speech. We have lost not only our sanity, but ourselves as a nation with the need to be politically correct, and frankly, it's grating on my nerves. Today my family went Christmas shopping, not holiday shopping or winter solstice shopping. We were shopping for Christmas presents to put under the Christmas tree where on Christmas morning, we will ponder on the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ and what His atoning sacrifice has given to us. We won't be thinking about a generic holiday, or any winter solstice. If I heard it once today, I heard it a dozen times, "Happy Holiday!" At one point, I said to the polite young man who wished me a happy holiday, "What holiday is it?"
"Er, uh," he bowed his head and whispered, "Christmas."
"So," says I, Merry Christmas then!" Apparently his store had told all the employees not use the dreaded word, Christmas. Again and again, it was all happy holiday. Another young man when I said first, "Merry Christmas"got the Mer, out but then quickly changed to happy holiday.
Let's see now, how long have we been saying Merry Christmas? I think it was Martin Luther who actually brought the first Christmas tree into his house, and I dare say he said Happy Christmas to someone. So for at least 500 years we have wished people Happy or Merry Christmas, but not now, not in the 21st century. Why? We don't want to offend anyone.
Well, I am going to wish people a Merry Christmas, and when they say to me Happy Holiday, I am going to ask each one as I did today, just what holiday it is! It makes them think, and some actually get brave and say the dreaded Christmas word.
To my Readers from other countries, I ask you, do you have the same problems where you live? Does political correctness run amuck where you are? I would love to hear from you. Tell me what is it like to prepare for Christmas (er holiday :) where you live.
