Little Surprises

Do you like surprises?  I do, but the ones I like most are the unexpected ones. Okay, so you think that last statement is an oxymoranic one, but here's what I mean.  Birthdays and Christmases come every year, no surprise that you will receive packages.  You may even know what to expect in those packages, because if you are anything like me, you have put out plenty of hints!

I can honestly say that until yesterday, I have only been truly unexpectedly surprised once in my life.  February 17th of last year was our son Timothy's birthday.  We called him early in the morning to wish him a happy birthday, but he said, "I have to go, I can't talk."  Needless to say we were upset and blamed the pressure on him from his workplace in Wisconsin.  This is all John and I talked about on our way to my violin lesson.  After the lesson, we went out for lunch still lamenting that his boss is, "just way to hard on Timothy." On the drive home, we really got worked up over it, and we walked through the door determined to call our son and tell him he needs to find different work.  But...there on the sofa grinning from ear to ear was Timothy!  I couldn't believe my eyes!  We cried, we hugged, and there in the background was Jayne, our lovely daughter who had known for a week that her brother would be home on his birthday!  I was surprised speechless!

On Tuesday, I thought about giving up this blog.  I honestly didn't think anyone read it.  Now a writer will tell you that one writes not to be read, but because one must write.  I have said that on numerous occasions, but in all honesty we truly do want to be read, and we want to think that someone out there likes what we write.  I began this blog as a writing exercise, because those in the "know" will say that the best way to become a good writer, is to write and write a lot, and a blog can be an exercise in writing.  Okay, I bought that too, but knowing someone checks your blog without being sent a link...well that would be the chocolate drizzled on the sundae for me.  Then the surpise came.  I recieved an e-mail from Amy, my dearest niece, and what a surprise to find she actually checked out my blog! She gave me my chocolate drizzled day!

Then I thought how wonderful God is.  He knows what we need and when we need it. Even the small things are big for Him.  Knowing one person other than myself checked out the blog gave me encouragement, and God loves to encourage His children.  But as I have thought about it, He gives us surpises daily.  After all even something as a sunset is a surprise.  How can that be?  Well, no two are ever alike, sometimes there are oranges and brillent reds, and other times muted purples and golden yellows.  Children see surprises around them all the time, but we adults become dulled in our senses and lose that childlke faith we once had.

Amy's surprise was a little one and yet it was huge.  Thank you, Amy, and be on the lookout for surprises, everyone... they are likely to happen!
